Chicago SOTW: Clearance – “Owner/Operator”

This week’s Chicago Song of the Week is “Owner/Operator” from lo-fi rock band Clearance. The track is a B-side on their new 7-inch titled Are You Aware released this past August. The four-piece have a sound comparable to Parquet Courts with their use of strident guitar chords while frontman Mike Bellis sings apathetically about obtaining a contentment with living an adequate life.

In an interview with Consequence of Sound, Bellis describes the track as

“my attempt at a talking-blues kind of song. Vague suspicions toward the pursuit of comfort or domesticity as an end to itself — a backhanded ‘carpe diem’ of sorts, with a cribbed Kinks line thrown in for good measure.”
