Bay Area SOTW: Caleborate – “On Silent”

Bay Area up-and-comer Caleborate dropped new single “On Silent” last month and it’s a beast. The Berkely-based rapper has been building steam since dropping his excellent debut album Hella Good last year. While the emcee may be young, he raps with a distinct cadence that makes him come off like an old soul.

The first thing you’ll notice about “On Silent” is the beat. The production is masterful, starting with a soul sample segued into some significantly hard-slapping drum samples. That’s when Caleborate comes in and raps his ass off. Describing his work ethic and passion for the art form, he flexes his skills and even cracks some jokes. “I stay strapped like niggas in my neighbourhood/no not with a gun, my pants too skinny, plus my aim ain’t good” he points out. This is before he spits a phenomenal interpolation of an Andre 3000 verse from Outkast’s “SpottieOttieDopaliscious.”

Listen to the track below, and make sure Caleborate is on your radar. He sounds like he could well be the next disciple of the TDE/Black Hippy collective.
